This 2016 the Nobel Prizes were again awarded to a collection of talented and unique individuals in Stockholm. Surprisingly, this year Bob Dylan was awarded the Noble Literature Prize, the first musician to have ever done so in this category, and one of the first musicians to be hailed as a poet by any major institution. Dylan was awarded the Prize for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, a decision which sparked controversy, with some claiming that it was unfair that Dylan be awarded the prize whilst other such as newspaper the Guardian, noting that the Prize had yet again been awarded to another “white male”. Dylan was even once called ” the worst poet ever” by Kurt Vonnegut in 1991. So far Dylan has not provided any comments on his feelings towards the situation and has remained quiet until now.
Bob Dylan, (March 24 1941) has been one of the most prolific and influential artists of all times, for more than five decades. Having composed songs with themes from the social and political to direct criticism of society, Dylan’s music ranges from pop, rock, blues and country. Dylan has sold more than ten million records in his career, and has picked up eleven Grammy awards, a Golden Globe and even a Academy Award. All in all this makes Dylan one of the most successful musicians of all time. In 2012 he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama, and throughout his career has met legendary musicians such as the Beatles.
This is the second time a rock star has been honored with a distinction on the level of the Nobel Prize ( the second being Sir Bob Geldof, who was Knighted for founding the Live Aid concert). Yet with such a extensive history of music and a undeniably large contribution to culture, with songs such as the famous Times They are a’ Changing ( used in the 2009 superhero flick Watchmen ), Knocking on Heavens Door and Blowing In the Wind one cannot deny that Dylan is as worth of the Prize as many others.
The Nobel Prize has long been one of the most sought after and prestigious awards to be ever created. Throughout the history of the Prize, it has been awarded to brilliant academic minds, literate geniuses and others of the sort. Amongst the winners of the Prize are household names such as Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. However since its creation in 1895 not a single musician has been honored with receiving this prestigious award until 2016.
