The Times They Are A’ Changing- Bob Dylan becomes First Musician to win Nobel Prize.

This 2016 the Nobel Prizes were again awarded to a collection of talented and unique individuals in Stockholm. Surprisingly, this year Bob Dylan was awarded the Noble Literature Prize, the first musician to have ever done so in this category, and one of the first musicians to be hailed as a poet by any major institution. Dylan was awarded the Prize for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, a decision which sparked controversy, with some claiming that it was unfair that Dylan be awarded the prize whilst other such as newspaper the Guardian, noting that the Prize had yet again been awarded to another “white male”. Dylan was even once called ” the worst poet ever” by Kurt Vonnegut in 1991. So far Dylan has not provided any comments on his feelings towards the situation and has remained quiet until now.

Bob Dylan, (March 24 1941) has been one of the most prolific and influential artists of all times, for more than five decades. Having composed songs with themes from the social and political to direct criticism of society, Dylan’s music ranges from pop, rock, blues and country. Dylan has sold more than ten million records in his career, and has picked up eleven Grammy awards, a Golden Globe and even a Academy Award. All in all this makes Dylan one of the most successful musicians of all time. In 2012 he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama, and throughout his career has met legendary musicians such as the Beatles.

This is the second time a rock star has been honored with a distinction on the level of the Nobel Prize ( the second being Sir Bob Geldof, who was Knighted for founding the Live Aid concert). Yet with such a extensive history of music and a undeniably large contribution to culture, with songs such as the famous Times They are a’ Changing ( used in the 2009 superhero flick Watchmen ), Knocking on Heavens Door and Blowing In the Wind one cannot deny that Dylan is as worth of the Prize as many others.

The Nobel Prize has long been one of the most sought after and prestigious awards to be ever created. Throughout the history of the Prize, it has been awarded to brilliant academic minds, literate geniuses and others of the sort. Amongst the winners of the Prize are household names such as Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. However since its creation in 1895 not a single musician has been honored with receiving this prestigious award until 2016.

Bob Dylan Takes Nobel Prize In Literature

BOB DYLAN STIRS UP CONTROVERSY AS HE BECOMES THE FIRST SONGWRITER TO WIN NOBLE PRIZE FOR LITERATURE IN STOCKHOLM.

Bob Dylan has been an iconic figure within the music industry for over 50 years, having risen to fame with his distinctive raspy voice and poetic lyrics. Last Thursday it was announced that he was the winner for this year’s Nobel Prize for literature, giving his artistic abilities which have been praised for decades, a new form of recognition.

It has been stated that Dylan’s songs, reflecting tragedy and heartbreak, are a work of art and that he should be recognized as a great poet of the English language. Sara Danius, secretary of the Swedish Academy has even said that his lyrical poetry stretches to the greatness of other highly respected writers such as William Blake and Milton.

This prize has stirred up huge controversy as many people argue that Dylan is a musician rather than a writer, but Danius claims that the artistic level of his poetry should be studied and that ” his words were meant to be performed, often with instruments, but they have survived incredibly well, on the book page. We enjoy the poetry and I think Dylan should be read as a poet”.

The Student Council starts off strong

Last night, the years 5-7 were treated to the school’s first Halloween party, where they got to play games, dance and sing karaoke in the Runnymede hall- and all for charity too!

The party, organized by the student council, who spent the afternoon decorating the hall, had baked Halloween themed cakes and made playlist destined for success, went unprecedentedly well.

Everyone, students and teachers included, were hugely impressed with the party, Miss Barr and Mr Crumpton singing praises to the council members and children running up to them excitedly asking when the Christmas Party was happening.
